Coat care and maintenance

A lot of dog owners are under the impression that a haircut for their pooch during the winter months is not a necessity. Well, in fact, it is more important than ever! we are dedicated to helping owners keep on top of dog grooming all year round, however, the winter months prove to be the most important time for upkeep of the coat.

While it can get very cold and it would make sense to keep your dog with a longer coat than it would have in the summer, it is also equally important to visit a groomer during the winter months for regular baths and brushes. We may not necessarily trim the coat if you do not wish us to, but regular bathing and brushing keep the coat knot free and we can keep a check on the health of your dogs’ skin condition. Long, wet, matted hair easily makes a cold, wet, and can bring on unwanted conditions such as infections of the skin.

If you wash your dog at home, it is important not to rub your dog dry with a towel as this creates matted hair. Instead, pat down gently with a towel and if your dog’s coat is knot free, the air will circulate through the coat as it should, ensuring that your dog becomes suitably dry and the skin will remain healthy. If the coat is matted, the air is not able to circulate as it should, leaving the skin damp can lead to some uncomfortable issues.

In addition to that, there are many other factors which could potentially be harmful in the winter environment for your dog, here are some issues to look out for that Country Style Dog Grooming can help with:

Potential coat issue

1. Hair around the nose and pads

The harsh winter weather can take its toll on these vital areas. As going on regular walks exposes your dog to cold winds and frozen temperatures. It is important to check your dog’s feet after a walk to get rid of any build up of dirt or hair in between your dog’s pads which could result in painful and sore feet. At Country Style Dog Grooming, we have a pawdicure spa package which moisturises your dog’s pads and also nose to ensure that these vital places do not become cracked or sore.

2.   Matted hair

Matted hair keeps in moisture, which can, therefore, hold bacterial growth which can bring on infection. Bringing your dog for regular grooming can take some of the strain off you, as we understand that your dog’s coat could potentially get out of hand whilst battling the weather, we are here to help and guide you on the best possible care for your pet.

If you are bathing and grooming your dog at home, it is important that you try to brush out your dog after bathing, and also using a moisturising shampoo can benefit your dog’s coat and skin.

Mats and tangles also prevent the distribution of the oils that naturally occur in the skin that help to condition and stimulate the skin and coat. This means an increase in dry skin, dull coat, and worse: infected hot spots.

3.   Skin irritation & infections

Hair that becomes matted doesn’t necessarily provide warmth and comfort for your dog, it could actually lead to becoming painful if mats are pulling on your dog’s skin.

During the winter it would be very difficult for your dog to dry completely, leaving your dog damp which could then potentially cause painful skin infections.

Regular dog grooming also highlights any of these issues that could develop as well as discovering anything within the coat that should not be there thus causing and pain or discomfort for your dog which you may have possibly overlooked.

All spa treatments with the exception of pawdicures have to be combined with a grooming package.

Ozone Spa Bath

20 minutes

Soothe and relax tired muscles in an ozone spa bath infused with green tea and aloe vera. The spa bath releases thousands of tiny bubbles per minute to massage the skin and relax joints and muscles for an immediate sense of well-being. This experience treats the skin and coat with contents rich in minerals, toning up during hair changing, stress periods, and recovery periods.

Therapeutic Mud Treatment

30 minutes

Nourish, strengthen, and encourage healthy cell regeneration with a therapeutic mud body treatment. As the mud detoxifies your dog’s skin, removing dirt, oils and other toxins, dead skin cells are replaced with nourishing minerals and soothing relief, boosting your dog’s ability to fight infections, dry skin, and other irritations that can lead to canine dermatitis. Mud is applied all over the body and massaged into the skin and fur.

Choose from:

  • Skin Soothe treatment: hot spot treatment for irritated, itchy, blemished skin; loaded with antioxidants and astringent ingredients to promote healing and comfort.
  • Skin Relief treatment: a toxin free, chemical-free, detergent free way to relief from parasites, while fortifying and hydrating the skin. Excellent way to fight yeast and parasites, an overall healthy dog mud bath treatment.
  • Coat care treatment: rejuvenate your dog’s skin and coat and help relieve and prevent excessive shedding by removing loose fur, releasing undercoat, and unclogging hair follicles.
  • Mobility treatment: relieves sore muscles and achy joints from exercise, arthritis, hip/elbow dysplasia, and other afflictions.

Facial

15 minutes

A hydrating and soothing vanilla and blueberry facial treatment to cleanse and balance. Pooch’s with facial folds or deep wrinkles need a regular skin cleansing routine. Wrinkles hold an accumulation of food, mucus, dry tears and debris that can lead to skin infections and harbour bad odours. This facial treatment is ideal for dogs such as Pugs, Bulldogs, Boxers and Shar Pei. A relaxing head massage is included to complete this gentle treatment.

Deep Conditioning Treatment

15 minutes

Perfect for dull, lifeless coats this conditioning treatment uses shea butter, coconut oil and rose oil to hydrate the hair and skin. It reduces loss of protein, regains hair’s natural moisture, improves elasticity, prevents breakage and adds texture, body and sheen. Suitable for all coat types with the exception of heavy double coated shedding breeds and pooches with a naturally oily coat.

Cleansing Tear Stain Treatment

20 minutes

A cleansing treatment to help reduce beard and tear staining. Especially popular for light and white coloured dogs such as Bichons, Westies and Poodles to help keep faces dazzling white. This treatment does not contain bleach, peroxide, steroids or other harmful ingredients

Whitening Treatment

15 minutes

This treatment is intended for dogs with dull white coats. It includes a whitening (non-bleach) shampoo and rich conditioning treatment to intensify your pooch’s coat colour. Does not stain the outer layer of the hair surface, thus allowing passage of light through the translucent hair surface to amplify gloss and colour. We advise combining this with our Tear Stain Treatment for a complete whitening experience.

Deluxe Pawdicure

30 minutes

Helps sooth paws damaged by gravel, hot pavements, or snow, or those that get itchy feet in the summer months due to pollen and other irritants. Treatment includes a milk thistle and vanilla paw soak, nail trim and file, between pads and paw trim, steam towel paw wrap and a gentle vitamin E butter paw pad massage. This soothing pawdicure will leave paws feeling totally refreshed.

Pooch Spa Day Experience

The pooch spa package has been created for pooch’s to experience the most effective and luxurious of treatments to ensure body, mind and spirit are ready for their next adventure. This package makes an ideal birthday or holiday season gift or just to show pooch or their owner how much you love them!
